The wheezing is similar to asthma but has a different cause in heart failure.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes people with heart failure cough up phlegm, a thick, mucous-like substance that may be tinged with blood. This often happens with a lung infection (<a class=\"addtooltip\" title=\"Inflammation of the lungs, usually caused by an infection. Pneumonia occurs more frequently in people with heart failure and lung congestion.\"><strong title=\"\">pneumonia<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The coughing or wheezing is due to the <a class=\"addtooltip\" title=\"When there is too much fluid in the blood circulating around the body and congestion the pressure rises in the blood vessels. Fluid then leaks out into the surrounding tissues, where it accumulates leading to oedema.\"><strong>fluid accumulation<\/strong><\/a> or <a class=\"addtooltip\" title=\"An excess of fluid in a part of the body.\"><strong>congestion<\/strong><\/a>, in the lungs, which increases the effort of breathing.<\/p>\n<p>If you notice a worsening in your cough or wheezing that affects your breathing, this may indicate that your heart failure is getting worse and you should contact your doctor or heart failure nurse.<\/p>\n<p>A dry, persistent cough can also be a side effect of some medicines used in heart failure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You may experience a persistent cough or wheezing (a whistling sound in the lungs or laboured breathing) due to your heart failure.
